Why the Cheapest Estimate Isn't Always the Least Expensive
Two companies can estimate the same home and still be planning two very different jobs.
Most homeowners compare estimates before hiring a cleaning company. That's a smart thing to do.
Price matters. Everyone has a budget, and finding a service that fits within it is an important part of the decision.
But when two estimates come back with very different prices, it's worth asking one more question:
Are they actually estimating the same job?
Two cleaning companies can walk through the same home and provide very different estimates—not because one company is right and the other is wrong, but because they may be planning two very different approaches.
One estimate may include more detailed work. Another may assume less time. One company may recommend a deep cleaning before beginning recurring service, while another may recommend starting with maintenance right away.
Until you understand what's behind each estimate, comparing prices alone doesn't tell the whole story.
What Are You Actually Comparing?
Imagine asking two painters to paint the same room.
Both estimates simply say, “Paint one room.”
At first glance, they sound identical.
But one painter plans to move the furniture, repair nail holes, sand rough spots, apply two coats of premium paint, and clean up before leaving.
The other plans to cover the floor, apply a single coat, and finish as quickly as possible.
Neither estimate is necessarily wrong. They simply represent two different approaches to the same project.
Most homeowners would expect those estimates to be different.
Professional cleaning works much the same way.
A cleaning estimate isn't simply a list of tasks.
It's a reflection of how a company plans to care for your home.
The Same Words Can Mean Different Things
On paper, two estimates may look surprisingly similar.
Bathrooms. Kitchen. Bedrooms. Floors. Showers.
The words are the same. That doesn't necessarily mean the work behind those words is the same.
Take a shower, for example.
Two companies may both include “Clean shower.”
One company may plan to spray a cleaner, wipe the surfaces, and move on.
Another may allow the product time to work, scrub away soap scum and buildup, detail the fixtures, rinse thoroughly, and spend the additional time needed to achieve the result the homeowner expects.
Both estimates included clean shower. The work behind those two words may be very different.
The same thing happens throughout an entire home.
Take a kitchen, for example.
Two estimates may both include “Clean kitchen.”
One company may wipe the countertops, clean the sink, and quickly clean the cabinet fronts before moving on.
Another may move small countertop appliances, clean underneath them, detail cabinet fronts around handles, remove grease buildup from high-touch areas, polish the faucet, and spend considerably more time in the same room.
Both estimates included clean kitchen. The work behind those two words may be very different.
A checklist can tell you what will be cleaned.
It doesn't always tell you how it will be cleaned.
Different Professionals See Different Things
The same idea applies long before anyone starts cleaning.
Imagine taking your car to two mechanics because the check engine light came on.
One recommends replacing a sensor.
The other recommends replacing several worn components that may have caused the problem in the first place.
The estimates are very different.
That doesn't automatically mean one mechanic is honest and the other isn't.
They may simply have different diagnoses, different priorities, or different recommendations based on what they observed.
Before deciding which estimate is better, most people would want to understand why they were different.
Professional cleaning is no different.
Two experienced professionals can walk through the same home and come away with different recommendations based on their process, experience, and philosophy.
Looking Beyond the Number
When homeowners compare estimates, the first thing they usually notice is the price.
That's understandable. It's the easiest part to compare.
What's much harder to compare—and often far more important—is everything that happened before that number was ever written down.
The questions that were asked.
The condition that was observed.
The amount of time that was planned.
The level of detail that was expected.
The recommendations that were made.
Every one of those decisions helps shape the final estimate.
If two estimates are very different, don't be afraid to ask why.
A professional should be able to explain how they arrived at their recommendation, what they expect to accomplish, and why they believe that's the right approach for your home.
Those answers often tell you far more than the number at the bottom of the estimate.
The biggest difference between two cleaning estimates often isn't the price. It's everything that went into creating them.
Understanding What the Estimate Represents
Choosing a cleaning company is about more than comparing prices.
It's about understanding what each estimate actually represents.
Two companies may be estimating the same home.
They aren't always estimating the same job.
